Our Founder
Read about our founder, Sensei Mark Johnson, and his story about how he began on his Martial Arts path.

Head Instructor, Sensei Gregg Garrison, began training in martial arts over 30 years ago. Moo Duk Kwan Tae Kwon Do was the foundation of his style under the chief instruction of Grand Master Seoung Eui Shin, a ninth degree black belt.

After years of training in Tae Kwon Do, Garrison studied Wado Ryu Karate, Hapkido, Jiujitsu and Kung Fu. In 2007, Garrison started training with Mark Johnson, the founder of Sho Gigei Karate, and obtained his Black Belt in the style. Garrison is now a 3rd degree black belt in Sho Gigei Karate and has been involved with teaching in Warren County the past six years.

During the last year, Mr. Garrison has moved from teaching in Morrison to opening a new school in McMinnville.

Gregg Garrison grew up in Franklin/Brentwood TN. He attended MTSU and earned his master’s degree in biology. After college, Garrison served in the Navy as a medical field corpsman with the Marine Corps. Garrison moved to Warren County in 1993 and was an Interpretive Specialist/Ranger at Rock Island State Park for 12 years. He now works as an associate professor at Motlow College where he teaches anatomy and physiology.

Instructor, Sempai Chris Matthews, started training at 6 years old under his father, a 5th degree black belt in the World Tae Kwon Do Federation & an 8th degree WTF instructor from Korea. Missing a year or two, he trained until at 15 years old, when he earned his intermediate black belt. He was close to testing for black, but took time off for college where he had a semester of Shotokan Karate. He started Sho Gigei Karate 3 years ago, and earned his black belt a year ago. He will be testing for his 2nd degree black belt in the next month.
